Chapter 11
âHeeey!â he yelled again as he skidded to a halt in front of Win. His round, full face covered in freckles and red as a tomato. âWho are you? You canât be in here!â
Win instantly palmed Bel, whoâd hidden in the shaggy length of his hair, and dropped him in his purse then felt around blindly for his cane. Which I didnât understand at first. It was right in front of him, hooked to the side of the desk.
Taking a deep inhale of breath, he looked over the manâs shoulder as he rose from the chair. âOh, thank goodness someoneâs here! I say, can you tell me where I am, chap?â he asked calmly, as though he were thoroughly confused.
âWho in blazes are you and what are you doing down here?â the man in scrubs asked as he stared at Win, throwing a foil-wrapped sandwich down on his desk with an angry toss.
Hoo, boy. This guyâs eyesâeyes in a face that looked like it belonged to Howdy Doodyâwere on fire.
âWin! Now is the time to make a break for it. Get out!â I cried.
Instead, Win ignored me and stared blankly in the direction of the man, though not directly at him. Arkady snickered, but I didnât get what game he was playing.
âMy name is Jake Swinson, and I hate to trouble you, but I do believe Iâm lost.â Reaching out in front of him, Win swiped at the air with his free hand, letting the paper with my name on it drop to the floor.
The man in scrubs frowned and made a windshield wiper motion in front of Winâs face. When he got no response, when Win didnât even blink, he asked, âAre youâ¦?â
My mouth fell open as Arkady laughed. He was not going to pretend he wasâ¦
âBlind. Indeed. That is my cross to bear, Iâm afraid.â
I gasped. He most assuredly was. Oh, this man. This. Man! I had to cover my mouth as my laughter became a wheezing snort.
Win gripped his cane and used it to swipe at the floor. âI fear Iâve made quite a mess ofâ¦your desk, is it?â
The man rocked back on his orthopedic shoes and shook his head. âAw, no worries. Itâs not my stuff. Thatâs Egan Josephâs stuff. Heâs the day shift coroner, and heâs kind of a slob. Weâre always messing with him about it.â
Winâs face instantly went worried, but if you were anyone else observing this Academy Award performance, youâd never know he was faking it.
âCoroner, you say? If I might ask, where am I?â
He said it with enough convincing trepidation that the manâs face instantly went soft, the angry red fading until he was left with only two spots of crimson on his cheeks.
âDude, youâre in the morgue.â He scratched his head full of unruly ginger hair. âMan, Iâm really sorry. I didnât know you were blind or I wouldnât have yelled like that.â
Win punctured the silence by bursting out laughing, startling the morgue guy. In fact, he laughed so hard, he bent at the waist.
